The story behind Operation Chastise

On the night of 16–17 May 1943, RAF 617 Squadron launched Operation Chastise, a daring mission to attack key dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley.

Flying specially modified Avro Lancaster bombers, the crews used the revolutionary bouncing bomb developed by British engineer Barnes Wallis.

The mission required exceptional flying skill, with aircraft operating at extremely low altitudes to deliver their bombs accurately.

Operation Chastise became one of the most famous aerial operations of the Second World War and remains an important chapter in the history of RAF Bomber Command.

Signed by Dambuster George 'Johnny' Johnson

George Leonard 'Johnny' Johnson served as a bomb aimer with 617 Squadron during Operation Chastise, flying aboard an Avro Lancaster that attacked the Sorpe Dam.

Johnson later became the last surviving original member of the Dambusters raid before his death in 2022.

His signature, alongside those of other signatories, gives this print a special connection to the people behind this extraordinary moment in aviation history.
