The Bristol Blenheim Mk I, powered by Bristol Mercury VIII engines, was developed from the civilian Type 142. This passenger plane was 50mph faster than the RAF's front-line fighters and was developed into the 142M, the military version that came to be called the Blenheim. When introduced into the RAF it was a ground-breaking aircraft but at the beginning of WW2 it quickly became outclassed by new fighters, leading to high numbers of fatalities amongst the brave crews.
